Make your own memory jar

How to make your own memory jar

Below is an activity that you can use with your own children. This is also an easy and fun activity to do with adults too.

You will need:

  • a clean empty coffee/jam jar
  • 4 bowls
  • salt
  • 4 sheets of paper
  • a pen
  • 4 colours of chalk

Instructions:

  1. On one of the sheets of paper, create a list of four things you remember about the loved one who has died. It could be a day trip, a walk with the dog, attending a football match or any special memory. Then choose a colour of chalk and put a dot next to a memory
  2. Spread out the four pieces of paper and pour the salt on them
  3. Use a different colour stick of chalk on each page and rub it over the salt to colour it
  4. Use the paper to make a funnel, then tip the salt in the jar one at a time and talk about the memory. You could put a layer of white salt in-between if you wanted to make stripes
  5. Then very gently tap the jar, to settle the contents. Don’t shake it as the colours will mix (unless you want this). Fill any empty space at the top with white salt to stop the colours mixing. Put the lid on and tape it if you want to make sure it’s extra secure
  6. Show your jar to other family members or friends and discuss the memories with them
