Specialist palliative and bereavement support provider, Compton Care, is marking the two-year anniversary of its Children and Young People’s Service – a vital resource for families navigating some of life’s most difficult moments. The charity, which provides high-quality, tailored care for people with life limiting conditions in the local community, was awarded funding by BBC Children in Need to support young members of its patients’ families.

The service offers regular events aimed at supporting the emotional wellbeing of children and young people during a challenging time in their lives. These sessions help reduce feelings of isolation and encourage the development of positive, supportive peer relationships in a caring, nurturing environment.  Activities have included arts and crafts, memory-making projects and outings such as theatre visits.

Lusia Coombes Children and Young People’s Support Worker at the charity said, “It’s important for children and young people who are experiencing the loss of a loved one to have space to grieve, and also celebrate their loved ones in a safe, secure and friendly environment.”

Last year the service supported nearly 200 children and young people, along with their families, through the events. In addition, 57 one-to-one emotional support sessions were delivered, both in schools and at Compton sites.

One parent shared: “The sessions for the children have been great, they have been really creative and made some fantastic things. It’s really helped them to just relax and spend a couple of hours being creative and free to express themselves.”

The charity has also recently opened a new children’s play area at its Compton Hall site, made possible by funding from St. James’s Place Foundation whose application was supported by Peter and Edward from PD Private Client Limited and WARRANT (Willenhall Area Relief Rehabilitation & Nursing Trust).

Lusia added “We are extremely grateful for the generous funding that enabled us to provide this welcome addition for our young visitors. The play area offers a fun and safe environment for children and young people to expend their energy while visiting loved ones or attending events and support appointments.”
