Parm started at Compton Care as a volunteer, before joining our team of experienced complementary therapists in 2022.

Here she shares what a day in her life is like, her passion for complementary therapies and what makes her job so rewarding…

“Every day is different and we often have to adapt. Firstly, we go through the caseload, referrals and updates. Then, depending on where we are based – Ruskin Road, Compton Hall or out in the community – we start our day and sessions with patients. We work with outpatients, patients staying on IPU or those being cared for in the community, as well as their loved ones. We may also be running a group therapy session, such as our popular Relax and Revive sessions.

“Complementary therapy supports the whole self – your mind, body and soul. As well as supporting patients with their physical health, our treatments can also help improve mental wellbeing, helping people to relax and release emotions.

“A lot of this is achieved through the use of essential oils. Scent can be so powerful at changing your mood or evoking positive memories. We have a range of oils, which we are trained to blend, whether a patient is looking to relax or for support with pain relief, or for grief and loss.

“My favourite part of the job is helping patients, supporting families and working alongside a diverse team, promoting the benefits of complementary therapy.

“I have treated so many lovely people but recently I was supporting a family member who had lost a relative and it was wonderful to hear how the complementary therapy treatments helped the patient’s mental, as well as physical, wellbeing. I also supported a patient staying on our Inpatient Unit, as well as their relatives. The whole family found the treatments beneficial and comforting and were very grateful for the empathy shown to them.

“The whole team feel very blessed and privileged to do the job we do.”

We offer a range complementary therapies at Compton Care, including aromatherapy, Cancer Touch therapies, Indian head massage, reflexology and reiki. We also run a mindfulness series called ‘Relax and Revive’, which has a significant positive impact on patient wellbeing.

We offer our free services in the community, on our Inpatient Unit, and within our dedicated relaxation therapy rooms at both our Compton Hall and Ruskin Road sites, allowing patients to experience their treatment in an environment that best meets their needs and that promotes comfort, calm and wellbeing.

Our range of complementary therapies is inclusive and available to Compton Care patients and their relatives.
