Compton Care, a leading provider of specialist palliative and bereavement support, has welcomed a much-needed funding boost from the government. The £217,778 grant, which is restricted to spending on buildings, grounds and IT systems, will help to ensure patients facing life-limiting conditions continue to receive care in the best environments possible.

For over 40 years, Compton Care has provided expert care to individuals navigating life with a terminal diagnosis, as well as support for their loved ones. Like many hospices across the UK, Compton faces financial pressures due to rising costs, shrinking statutory funding, and increasing demand for end-of-life care. Last year alone, the charity’s running costs totalled £14.5 million.

Rachel Overfield, CEO of Compton Care, said:

This much-needed funding will be used to enhance patient facilities allowing us to continue to deliver expert, compassionate care to patients and their families. Many people assume hospices are fully funded by the government, but in reality, as a charity as well as a provider of core NHS activity, we rely heavily on community donations. This investment will help us bridge the gap and ensure that no one in our care faces their journey alone. As the fund has a restricted use and will not resolve our current deficit position, the need to raise funds via the NHS and through our own fundraising activity will continue to be essential to ensure the sustainability of our services into the future.

Compton Care has expanded and developed its services in recent years to reach even more people in need. Initiatives include the opening of a second site, a Palliative Outpatient Clinic in Low Hill, the development of a Virtual Ward providing specialist intensive support to patients in their own homes, and the transformation of its 18-bed Inpatient Unit into modern, therapeutic and peaceful space.

Rachel concluded:

We continue to have ambitious plans that include further expansion of our specialist services, ensuring more people receive the care and support they deserve. Injections of funds like this will certainly help progress these, allowing us to enhance and grow our services for the community.
