Compton Care introduces neurological support
Compton Care has recently launched a new support service for those living with the effects of a neurological condition.
It is estimated that 1 in 6 people in the UK have a neurological condition or will be diagnosed with one in their lifetime, with approximately 800,000 hospital admissions each year as a result of the effects of living with a condition such as Parkinson’s Disease, Motor Neurone Disease or Dementia.
Compton has introduced a specialist role in order to support those living with a neurological condition and to help reduce unnecessary hospital visits.
Kayleigh Beardsmore, Neurological Conditions Coordinator at Compton Care, has a background in specialised nursing for those with complex mental health conditions, together with delivering training on the subject.
Since starting in the role, Kayleigh has already helped more than 30 patients, in addition to building connections with professionals and support groups in the area. She will be working closely with colleagues across the charity, including counsellors and its Children and Young People Support Worker, to help facilitate a holistic approach to supporting those with complex needs.
Kayleigh said: “I’m delighted to have joined Compton Care – a charity I have always admired for the great work it does providing palliative and end of life care. We identified a gap, which was that those living with a neurological condition, particularly younger people, were sometimes excluded from services – for example, a lot of existing support groups take place between 9 and 5 when some of those who would benefit are at work – so we set up a Saturday morning group.
“It’s really rewarding to be able to support those accessing our services to achieve their goals, which could be anything – from going to college to finding a job, as well as feeling more confident with enjoying trips out.”
Compton Care is partnering with WV Active to launch a ‘Neuro Network’, open to all ages, which aims to empower those with a neurological condition to get involved with physical activities, in addition to keeping minds active and giving the opportunity to meet new people.
