A day in the life of Natalie, Newly Qualified Nurse on our Inpatient Unit
We took a moment to have a chat to Natalie who joined Compton in November 2025 as a newly qualified nurse.
“When I arrive at Compton’s Inpatient Unit, my shift begins with a handover from the previous team. This is such an important part of the day, as it ensures continuity of care for our patients and allows us to understand how they’ve been feeling, what matters most to them, and any changes we need to be aware of. It helps create a seamless transition, so patients feel safe, supported, and well cared for.
“Throughout my shift, I balance a range of clinical responsibilities with compassionate, person-centred care. I administer medications, manage symptoms, provide personal care, and escalate any concerns to our brilliant medical team. Working closely with colleagues across the Inpatient Unit means care is always collaborative, responsive, and tailored to each individual.
“However, a big part of my role goes beyond the clinical aspects of nursing. Emotional support is central to everything we do. I spend time listening to patients and their loved ones, answering questions, offering reassurance, and making sure they feel heard and understood. For many families, this can be an incredibly overwhelming and emotional time, and being able to offer calm, compassionate support can make a real difference.
“I joined Compton in November 2025 as a newly qualified nurse, but my journey here started earlier. While I was a student, I completed my elective placement at Compton, and that experience truly shaped my career path. Seeing the level of care, dignity, and compassion given to patients and families confirmed that palliative care was where I wanted to be.
“Families are at the heart of the care we provide. Supporting loved ones through some of the most challenging and sensitive moments of their lives is a responsibility I take very seriously. Whether it’s explaining what to expect, answering difficult questions, or simply sitting with someone who needs support, those moments can be incredibly meaningful.
“My favourite part of working at Compton Care is the opportunity to truly get to know patients, learning about their lives, their stories, and what brings them comfort. That time allows us to build trust and provide care that is deeply personal and meaningful.
“Hearing positive feedback from patients and loved ones reminds me just how important the care on our Inpatient Unit really is. Knowing that I’ve helped someone feel safe, comfortable, or supported during such a difficult time is incredibly rewarding.
“As a newly qualified nurse, I feel very fortunate to work within such a compassionate and supportive team. I continue to learn every day, both professionally and personally, and I’m proud to be part of an organisation where care, dignity, and kindness are at the heart of everything we do.
“Working at Compton Care is a privilege, and being able to support patients and their families during such important moments is something I will always value.”
Support our Moments that Matter appeal and help our nurses continue to be there for patients and their families in the important moments, when it matters most.
