Advanced Communications Skills Course, October 2023 - Katrina's Feedback

Valuable learning experience

I have just completed the two-day ACST course with Jenny Hadley and Stephanie Harris and it excelled my expectations. I felt the need to share my positive experience.

Prior to the course I was beyond nervous. Despite being qualified nearly six years I have never attended a ‘formal’ communication training course before. Difficult situations were something that I was aware I struggled with prior to the course. I was unsure what to expect initially but I was hoping to gain more confidence and be more comfortable in such situations.

The pre-workbook and emails gave all relevant information needed prior to the course, including the delivery method of the content which gave more clarity on what to expect and what is expected. It also enabled you to think about what you wanted to achieve from the course.

The idea of roleplay was really daunting however, I shouldn’t have worried as Jenny and Steph, the course leaders, ensured it was a safe space to be open. By enabling such a safe space made all the difference as it allowed people to open up about their struggles in regards to communication. This made me feel more at ease knowing I wasn’t the only one that felt the way I did. The way we were supported during the course by Jenny and Steph was second to none and their knowledge was apparent. I don’t think I have ever felt more comfortable on a course than I did today (despite the scary elements).

Despite the role play element being daunting, I felt it was very beneficial. The use of feedback was great in terms of the way we delivered it and was a good learning opportunity for everyone.

The timing of breaks was also well thought out to enable people to sit and process their thoughts as discussing difficult situations can be mentally exhausting.

I think there were several great little touches such as the group agreement including the concept of confidentiality, the lunch and refreshments that were provided, the participants handbook (which was excellent) and the reflection activity at the end of the course.

I also want to thank the actors (Sean and Bella) for playing such an amazing role. They were brilliant and adapted to all types of different scenarios and characters really well! They were also non-judgmental and respectful at all times.

Jenny and Steph, I hope it was evident from my engagement, interest and passion that I thoroughly enjoyed the course. It was such a valuable learning experience for me! I have taken away so much that I can use throughout the rest of my nursing career! So again, thank you!
