After losing her dad aged just 9, Claire and her family received support from Compton.
“From counselling to days out with other children and families, the support that my family received was overwhelming.
“As Compton is local, and relies heavily on donations and volunteers, I was over the moon when my employer, Veolia, were happy to support them. “
During their volunteering days, members of the teams from Veolia tidied the gardens at The Cedars, and also spent time sorting through donated stock in some of our charity shops.
“As a team we came together to use our corporate responsibility days to support Compton, however since visiting and learning more about the work that they do, we’ve decided to give some more of our own time.
“We have a charity day planned at the end of November where there’ll be a raffle and a cake sale. We’re also going to be taking on a virtual challenge to cycle the miles from our office in Staffordshire, to our head office in London, covering as many of our depots as we can along the way.”
Teams of volunteers from Veolia are also supporting our Light up a Life event in December and also have a team competing at the next Compton Quiz Night.
After their day at Compton, the team felt a real sense of achievement having been able to give back to a local cause. They spent time with our Corporate Fundraiser Simon, who explained the hard work and funding required to keep Compton running, something many of the staff members were unaware of.
“Following on from our day at Compton, my manager expressed that until now she had no idea of the magnitude of the operation and said herself that Compton is ‘an amazing charity, full of fantastic people on both sides of the service’.”
When asked about whether Claire would recommend spending a day volunteering at Compton she commented: “I’d recommend that businesses get in touch and find out what you can do to make a difference. You really don’t know the full extent of what goes on there until you go and visit and speak to the staff.
“They rely so much on volunteers and donations to be able to continue giving quality support to their patients and families.”
After completing their Corporate Responsibility days, a number of Veolia staff members have expressed an interest in volunteering at Compton in their own time including Claire, who has an interest in spending time with patients in our Day Therapies Centre, and ensuring that nurses get a well-deserved cuppa.
