Coseley Support Group raises £100,000 for Compton Care

A group of fundraisers are celebrating after it was revealed they have raised £100,000 for Compton Care.

Coseley Support Group, which consists of six committee members, was established in 1989 and since then it has raised the staggering amount in aid of Compton Care through various fundraising activities, such as barn dances, coffee mornings, raffles and coach trips.

Committee Member Iris Gamble said: “I used to be a palliative care nurse so I know all about the excellent work Compton does, which is why I wanted to help them and fundraise.

“Coseley Support Group started in 1989 and we began by organising coffee and chat events and we would knit and sell the items that we had made all in aid of Compton.

“In the early days we would raise a few hundred pounds from dances and as the group grew, we began to raise more and more money. We’ve had so much fun over the years and held some wonderful events including a few shows, which always go down really well with the local community.”

Compton said the amount of money raised will fund the equivalent of 205 freshly cooked meals for a patient staying on its Inpatient Unit, plus 100 overnight visits by its team of Compton Care at Home Healthcare Assistants to provide personal care in a patient’s home, as well as 100 Compton Community Nurse visits to provide specialist care and emotional support to patients in their own homes, 50 occupied bed days on its Compton Care Inpatient Unit and 100 counselling sessions providing emotional support and a safe space to talk.

Speaking about reaching the milestone £100,000 mark, Ms Gamble she said the group were ‘thrilled’ to have raised so much money.

She added: “People are so generous and it’s lovely to see so many people supporting us and helping such a wonderful charity. Never did I think we would raise £100,000. It’s such an achievement and myself and all of the other members of Coseley Support Group are absolutely thrilled and we are going to continue raising money for Compton for as long as we can.”

Hamish Shilliday, Director of Income Generation at Compton Care, was handed a cheque for £4,000 at a presentation evening at St Chad’s Church in Coseley on Friday evening taking the groups total amount raised since 1989 to £100,000.

He said: “We are overwhelmed that Coseley Support Group have raised such a phenomenal amount for Compton Care and so grateful for their dedication and continued support over the last 30 years.

“Because of them we are able to continue to provide extraordinary care for our patients and their families living with complex and incurable illnesses. We look forward to supporting them both now and in the future with all of their fundraising efforts.”
