Compton’s Lymphoedema Team Win ‘Star’ Prize!

We’ve always known that Compton’s amazing Lymphoedema team are true stars in every sense of the word, but now it’s official!

Our lymphoedema nurses found themselves unexpectedly nominated to win a real-life star, courtesy of Wound Care Today and Juzo UK, and were even more delighted when they discovered that they had won a star as part of the special prize-giving campaign.

  • What is Lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema is a condition that occurs when there is damage to the body’s lymphatic system, resulting in large, and sometimes uncomfortable swelling. It can affect any part of the body but is usually found in the arms or legs. At Compton, lymphoedema patients are partnered with a specialist practitioner who provides advice, support and treatment if needed, empowering patients to take control and manage their condition.

The team were nominated by a colleague at Lymph Care UK, a lymphoedema service based in Dudley, after Wound Care Today put the word out that they were searching for NHS nurses who had gone above and beyond during the pandemic.

Nominations flooded in from around the country. Here’s what Lymph Care UK had to say about us:

“I would like to nominate the Lymphoedema Team at Compton Care. During lockdown their service was scaled down (and) they were all deployed into the hospice.  They were placed into a completely new area which is amazing, they just adapted and worked well as a team.  I believe they should be given a star for the amazing work they have done during the last 12 months. Well done to them ️”

The star certificate itself comes from Star Name, who allows you to track your own unique star in real time on their website. The team were able to assign a name to the star themselves, and settled on ‘EPIONE’. Epione was an Ancient Greek goddess of recovery and healing, with the name actually deriving from the word epios, meaning ‘soothing’. The team felt that it was the perfect fit after Compton’s fight against COVID-19 and how staff from all areas of Compton came together to help each other get through such a difficult time.

Fancy having a look at Epione yourself? Simply head on over to and enter its unique reference number ‘1652000’ into the search bar. You can even see it through a telescope as the site also provides the viewing coordinates.

A big thank you to Lymph Care UK for the kind nomination!
